Permanent Magnets in Magnetic Couplings

Magnetic couplings consist of two core components: a driver linked to the prime mover (motor), and a driven element.

These components interact magnetically to facilitate non-contact transfer of mechanical energy. This advanced method offers several advantages:

  • Component isolation to minimize or eliminate mechanical vibration
  • Axial, radial, and angular misalignment tolerance between the prime mover and the load
  • Flexibility in speed variation and regulation between the prime mover and the load

Permanent magnet materials, extensively employed in magnetic couplings, facilitate non-contact rotation transmission. This reduces mechanical contact, wear, and tear, subsequently enhancing transmission efficiency while cutting down maintenance costs.

For optimal magnetic field strength across the air gap, while factoring in the operating temperature and environment, the right magnetic material should be chosen for magnetic couplings:

  • NdFeB: Suitable for temperatures up to 150°C. Requires corrosion protection.
  • SmCo: Can withstand temperatures up to 350°C. Optional corrosion protection.

Common shapes include cylindrical and ring magnets.
